Certified Roon Ready for effortless control

As a certified Roon Ready network player, the SHD integrates effortlessly with your Roon Nucleus or other Roon Core server and Roon Remote apps. This compatibility provides easy access to your entire music library, with an intuitive interface, flawless setup, and exceptional audio performance.

Built-in Volumio streaming

The SHD also runs Volumio, an open-source network streamer that allows you to enjoy music from USB drives, Internet Radio, and streaming services like Spotify, Tidal, and Qobuz. Control Volumio from your web browser or the dedicated Android and iOS apps for a seamless user experience across devices.

Analogue and digital connectivity

With three digital inputs, two analogue inputs, and USB audio input, the miniDSP SHD fits into any setup with ease. Its four output channels are available as single-ended RCA, balanced XLR, and S/PDIF digital outputs, giving you the flexibility to connect to multiple devices or create a fully custom setup. All outputs are available through USB audio, so you can even record your audio directly.

Powerful DSP and integration tools

The miniDSP SHD includes a full suite of DSP tools to perfect your audio environment. Each of the four output channels offers independent 10-band parametric EQ, high-precision crossovers up to 48 dB per octave, gain and delay adjustments, and a compressor/limiter for optimal sound quality. The flexible 2 x 4 matrix mixer provides complete control over signal routing, making it easy to add mono or stereo subwoofers, create custom crossovers or build an active two-way speaker.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the miniDSP SHD used for?

The SHD is a digital audio processor that combines a DAC, streamer, preamp, and room correction system in one unit. It’s ideal for managing subwoofers, applying EQ, and correcting room acoustics using Dirac Live.

Do I need a computer to set it up?

Yes, initial setup and configuration are done using a computer running macOS or Windows. You’ll use miniDSP’s Device Console software for DSP settings and Dirac Live software (included) for room correction. After setup, it can operate independently.

Can I use the SHD with my existing amplifier?

Yes. The SHD connects between your source (or streamer) and your power amplifier or active speakers. It provides both balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) analogue outputs.

Is it easy to use with Roon or Volumio?

Yes. The SHD is Roon Ready and has Volumio pre-installed. You can stream music directly from Roon, Qobuz, Tidal, or your local files without needing a separate device.

How does Dirac Live improve sound?

Dirac Live measures your room and corrects problems like bass boom, phase distortion and poor imaging. The result is clearer, more natural sound with better timing and balance.

What’s the difference between the SHD and SHD Studio?

The SHD includes a DAC and analogue inputs/outputs, while the SHD Studio is a digital-only version with no built-in DAC. Choose the SHD if you need analogue connectivity.

What is the difference between the SHD and the Flex 2×4?

The SHD is a higher-end, more versatile processor. It includes multiple analogue and digital inputs and outputs, whereas the Flex comes in separate versions (with digital, TRS balanced analogue or RCA analogue outputs) so you have to choose your configuration up front. The SHD also comes with Dirac Live included as standard, while it’s an optional paid upgrade on Flex models. The SHD features miniDSP’s highest quality DACs, and includes a built-in network streamer with Roon Ready and Volumio support – features not available on any Flex version. If you want an all-in-one solution with maximum flexibility and the best performance, the SHD is the way to go.

Can the SHD control multiple subwoofers?

Yes. The SHD has four output channels and a flexible matrix mixer, so you can set different EQ, delays and levels for up to four subwoofers, or perfectly integrate up to two subwoofers with a pair of stereo speakers.

Does the SHD come with a remote control?

Yes. The SHD includes an infrared (IR) remote control for functions like volume, input selection, preset selection and mute. More advanced control is handled through the Device Console software or Volumio web interface.

Do I need a microphone?

Yes, you’ll need a calibrated measurement microphone to use Dirac Live room correction. We recommend the miniDSP UMIK-1, which is plug-and-play and fully supported by the SHD software.

Can anyone use the SHD or does it require specialist knowledge?

You don’t need to be an expert. Dirac Live walks you through the measurement and correction process step by step. Device Console gives you full control of the DSP, but you can start with the basics and learn as you go. And if you get stuck, you’re always welcome to contact us – we’re happy to help.
