About the Graham Audio LS3/5A
The Graham Audio LS3/5A is a fully licensed reproduction of one of the most celebrated loudspeakers ever made — built to the original BBC specification by one of the engineers who knows it best.
A brief history of the LS3/5A
The LS3/5A emerged from necessity. When the BBC developed its original LS3/5 for use in outside broadcast vehicles and cramped control rooms, KEF subsequently altered both drive units. The changes were significant enough to require substantial re-engineering — including decoupling the B110 woofer from the baffle, modifying the crossover, and adding the now-iconic protective tweeter grille and felt pads. The result was different enough from the original to warrant a new designation: the LS3/5A. It went on to become one of the most reviewed, most copied and most debated loudspeakers of all time.
The Graham Audio interpretation
Graham Audio’s version is engineered by Derek Hughes, whose family connection to BBC monitor design spans generations. Every authentic detail is retained: the perforated metal tweeter grille, the thick felt pads, the Velcro grille frame, the 12mm birch plywood cabinet with fixed rear panel, all in accordance with BBC specifications. The drive units — a 110mm mid/bass and 19mm fabric dome tweeter — are developed to faithfully reproduce the performance of the originals.
The result is a speaker with exceptional midrange clarity, a sweet top end and an ability to communicate the emotional content of music that few loudspeakers at any price can match. It is not a speaker that flatters recordings or smooths things over — it is a monitor, and it behaves like one.
Available in cherry, ebony, oak, rosewood and walnut veneers.
