About the VXN Phono Stage

The VXN is Exposure’s flagship phono stage, built as a standalone development of the phono circuit in their long-running XM3. Exposure’s designers added more transistors in parallel in the moving coil stage to lower noise, and moved to polystyrene and polypropylene capacitors throughout the audio path in place of the electrolytics used elsewhere in the range.

Moving magnet and moving coil cartridges get separate input sockets, with a front-panel switch between them — so two turntables, or two arms, can stay connected and you flick between them rather than swapping cables. Loading and gain are set via DIP switches on the rear panel: MM loading is fixed at 47kΩ/220pF with four gain options (40/46/54/55dB), while MC gets full flexibility, with loading adjustable across 12 steps from 32Ω to 1,000Ω and gain options of 54/60/63/66dB. That range covers most moving coil cartridges on the market, including low-output and unusually-loaded designs.

Power supply

The VXN phono stage has no mains inlet of its own — it’s designed to run from the separate VXN power supply. The phono stage has two DC inputs, purpose-designed for the two outputs on a single VXN power supply, but they also allow a second power supply to be added, giving each channel its own independent feed. Most customers will run the standard single shared supply.

Features

  • Fully discrete signal path — the phono amplification circuit uses no ICs; the only op-amps on the board sit in the power supply regulation stage, not the audio path, each channel getting a pair of hybrid regulators preceded by active “gyrator” smoothing to keep hum off the regulated lines
  • More transistors run in parallel in the moving coil stage than Exposure’s XM3, for lower noise
  • Polystyrene and polypropylene capacitors used throughout the signal path, including the RIAA equalisation stage
  • Separate MM and MC input sockets, switchable from the front panel
  • Rear-panel DIP switches for loading and gain — MM fixed at 47kΩ/220pF (40/46/54/55dB gain); MC adjustable across 12 loading steps from 32Ω–1,000Ω (54/60/63/66dB gain)
  • High quality all-aluminium casework and extruded front panel
  • Three year guarantee
  • Available in black only
