Exposure XM9 Mono Power Amplifiers

The XM9 is sold and used as a pair – one chassis per channel, each with its own 200W toroidal transformer, power supply and output stage. Because neither channel draws on a shared supply, a demanding transient on one side doesn’t pull current away from the other – useful with speakers that dip low in impedance or call for sudden bursts of power on complex material. Splitting left and right into separate chassis also rules out the crosstalk that can creep in between channels sharing a single stereo casework, for cleaner separation across the soundstage.

The signal path is fully DC-coupled, removing the coupling capacitors that would otherwise roll off low frequencies and add their own phase shift – the result is a more direct connection between input and output, with nothing in the path narrowing bass extension. A cascode gain stage keeps noise on the power-supply rails out of the signal, for a quieter background behind quiet passages, and Toshiba bipolar output transistors are chosen for their current-handling into demanding loads, so the amplifier stays composed rather than compressing when a speaker’s impedance dips.

XM9 mono amps share their half-width chassis with the XM7 preamplifier, forming a compact pre/power set within the XM series. An internal link switches each XM9’s input stage between balanced and unbalanced operation to match the whatever the XM7 (or another preamp) sends it. Aluminium casework with an extruded front panel controls resonance that could otherwise feed back into the circuit.
