Moor Amps Angel Pre Preamplifier
The Angel Pre keeps volume and input switching passive, then adds output buffers to drive your power amplifier over RCA or XLR. Gold crosspoint relays, a motorised ALPS volume control and a unity-gain AV input make it a flexible hub for an Angel system.

About the Moor Amps Angel Pre
A short signal path with buffered outputs
The Angel-Pre is a preamplifier designed to partner the Angel power amplifiers from Moor Amps. Its audio path is deliberately simple: input selection and volume control are passive, with no active gain stage, and the signal then passes through output buffers to drive the power amplifier. Moor Amps settled on this layout after extended listening tests.
The buffers run from their own independent supply feeds, regulated by Moor Amps’ low-feedback analogue regulator circuits. That keeps the only active part of the audio path apart from the switching and control circuitry.
The frequency response extends from 5 Hz to 50 kHz within ±1 dB, and balanced XLR and single-ended RCA outputs cover the inputs of both the Angel 6 Mk II and the Angel 4 Mk II.
Relay switching and a motorised ALPS volume control
Inputs and outputs are switched with gold crosspoint relays, which keep switching noise low and add very little of their own to the signal.
Volume is handled by an ALPS potentiometer with its gangs paralleled, a choice made for long life and quiet operation. It’s motorised, so the remote turns the analogue control itself rather than a digital attenuator.
Mute ramps the level down and back up gradually, so there are no clicks. You can set it as a quiet mute, where the music carries on at a low level, or a silent mute.
Connections for AV, recording and headphones
There are four line-level inputs for sources such as a DAC, streamer or phono stage. A fifth input is fixed at unity gain (G=1), so an AV processor can set the level of the front left and right channels when the system doubles for home cinema.
A tape loop provides a record output and a monitor input, and a separate line-level output can feed an external headphone amplifier. Two standby trigger outputs bring connected power amplifiers in and out of standby with the preamp, and standby draw is under 0.5 W.
Self-damping aluminium casework
The case is built from heavy machined aluminium panels of different thicknesses, clamped together so that each damps the others. That resists sound pressure and vibration reaching the circuitry. Connections are made through machined RCA sockets chosen for low contact resistance and long-term reliability.
Features
Signal path & switching
Passive volume and switching
No active gain stage ahead of the outputs, so the audio path stays short.
Buffered outputs
Output buffers drive the power amplifier from independent supply feeds.
Gold crosspoint relays
Low-noise switching for every input and output.
Low-feedback regulation
Moor Amps’ analogue regulator circuits supply the output buffers.
Volume & control
ALPS volume control
Paralleled gangs for long life and quiet operation.
Motorised for remote use
The remote turns the analogue potentiometer itself.
Soft mute
Level ramps down and up gradually to avoid clicks.
Quiet or silent mute
Choose whether muted music drops to a low level or cuts out completely.
