About the Dynavector Karat 17DX
The Dynavector Karat 17DX is built on the KARAT series’ “dispersion theory” – developed for the original KARAT in 1981, the world’s first diamond-cantilever moving coil cartridge. A signal travelling through a cantilever behaves as a series of overlapping wave packets, and the speed of that transmission varies with frequency; the shorter the cantilever, the less that dispersion distorts the waveform. At 1.7mm, the Karat 17DX’s solid diamond cantilever is short enough to extend clean high-frequency reproduction to close to 100kHz, with a frequency response measured ruler-flat within ±0.5dB from 100Hz to 30kHz.
That same short length means the cartridge body can contact the record surface if tracking force is set too high, so staying within Dynavector’s recommended 1.8–2.0g range matters more than usual with this cartridge.
A body built around the cantilever’s speed
The Karat 17DX’s body is machined from solid brass, chosen after extensive trial production for how it complements the cantilever’s frequency characteristics, extending high-frequency response without added harshness. The magnet has also moved from neodymium to samarium-cobalt, for lower magnetic resistance and a clearer sound field with a faster rise time and higher resolution. A flux damper and Dynavector’s softened magnetism technology round out the magnetic circuit, removing the harshness and edginess more commonly associated with MC cartridge designs.
