miniDSP KD-1 Smart Remote Control

The miniDSP KD-1 “Kontrol Dial” is the perfect solution for miniDSP audio processor owners who want a more premium, tactile and informative interface than a traditional infrared remote. Compatible with the Flex, Flex Eight, SHD and SHD Studio models, the KD-1 provides a tactile dial with a built-in display for precise volume management, source selection, preset selection and more.

While miniDSP products are famous for their invisible, set-and-forget processing, the KD-1 brings that power to your fingertips with a beautiful high-resolution OLED display. It doesn’t just change the volume; it provides visual feedback on your current settings, including preset names and even metadata for streaming content.

Housed in a sturdy aluminium base with a smooth-action rotary encoder, the KD-1 communicates wirelessly via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or Wi-Fi, allowing for a clean, cable-free look on your coffee table or desk (power is provided via a simple USB-C connection). Whether you are toggling Dirac Live or switching between your turntable and digital inputs, the KD-1 makes interacting with your system a joy.

KD-1 and Roon

The latest KD‑1 beta firmware adds Roon control, free for all existing KD‑1 owners. Authorise your KD‑1 with your Roon server and it will scan for devices to control. No miniDSP audio processor, bridge or other extra hardware is needed – just a KD‑1.

We tested this update with the Roon Nucleus One and a couple of other Roon servers, and it seems to work really well, even in this beta version. After connecting the KD-1 to our WiFi network, we were able to scan for and connect to the Roon server, switch between zones (we tested Roon Ready, Roon Bridge and AirPlay endpoints) and control a variety of functions including play / pause, next / previous track, volume control and mute. The KD-1’s display shows the album art and metadata of the current track.
