About the miniDSP UMIK-1
The miniDSP UMIK-1 (sometimes written UMIK 1) is a plug-and-play calibrated USB measurement microphone that serves as the bridge between a “good” sound system and a “perfect” one. Whether you are battling muddy bass or harsh reflections, the UMIK-1 provides the data you need to fix your room’s acoustics with professional precision.
Compatible with Windows, macOS, Linux, and iOS, the UMIK-1 does not require an external audio interface or preamplifier. As a USB Audio class 1 device, it is automatically recognised by all major operating systems, ensuring seamless setup without the need for additional drivers.
UMIK-1 works seamlessly with all popular measurement software, including Room EQ Wizard (REW) and Dirac Live. The UMIK-1 is automatically recognised and works perfectly with both REW and Dirac Live for room correction and audio analysis. It is an essential partner for room correction, crossover design and subwoofer integration with miniDSP audio processors.
Each UMIK-1 microphone is individually calibrated at the factory, for maximum accuracy. Two unique calibration files are provided, containing frequency / decibel offset values to compensate for slight mic-to-mic variations, one for horizontal orientation (0 degrees) and another for vertical orientation (90 degrees). To retrieve your UMIK-1’s calibration files, just enter its serial number into miniDSP’s UMIK-1 page.
For even greater precision and the ability to capture higher frequencies and greater dynamic range, miniDSP now also offers the premium UMIK-2 microphone.
Benefits
- Plug-and-Play Simplicity: No external power or audio interface required. Simply plug into your PC, Mac or iPad and start measuring. Ideal for plug-and-play acoustic measurement with minimal setup.
- Individually Calibrated: Includes two unique calibration files for vertical and horizontal orientation.
- The Gold Standard for REW & Dirac: Recommended by experts worldwide as the first choice microphone for Room EQ Wizard (REW) and Dirac Live calibration. Ideal for acoustic measurement and room analysis.
- Low Output Noise Level & Accurate Results: Delivers low output noise level and highly accurate results for both speaker and room acoustic measurements, ensuring precise calibration.
- Wide Frequency Response & High SPL Handling: Supports frequency response measurements from 20 Hz to 20 kHz with ±1 dB accuracy, and can handle sound pressure levels up to 133 dB without distortion — perfect for home cinema and subwoofer calibration. Features an integrated 24-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter for direct digital connection.
- Omnidirectional Polar Pattern: The omnidirectional design makes it ideal for capturing overall room response and acoustics.
Most listeners never hear their system’s full potential because of room interference. Reflections, resonances and other issues can significantly impact sound quality, but the UMIK-1 helps you to identify and correct these issues by providing precise measurements at the listening position.
The UMIK-1 allows you to calibrate your system by capturing how sound behaves in your own room, measuring decay times, impulse responses, and identifying room modes and reflections. It is designed to simplify the calibration process for home audio setups, enabling accurate time alignment and equalisation of subwoofers and speakers. The UMIK-1 allows you to identify “boomy” frequencies, find the best speaker placement, and align your subwoofers for a seamless, punchy soundstage.
Subwoofer integration with the UMIK-1
The UMIK-1 can precisely measure the sound pressure level (SPL), frequency response and relative phase of your speakers and subwoofers, in your room. Using this information, you can quickly determine the best positions for your speakers and sub, the best listening positions, and the optimal settings for your sub’s volume, crossover and phase controls.
In systems featuring an audio processor or an amplifier with more advanced crossover controls, you can go even further. You can set low pass filters for the subwoofers, high pass filters for the speakers, and adjust delays to perfectly align the relative phase of both. This lifts the performance of both your speakers and subs, by relieving the speakers of reproducing the most challenging low frequencies, and providing degree-perfect phase alignment of your speakers and subs.
Room correction with the UMIK-1
The UMIK-1 works seamlessly with Room EQ Wizard (REW) to identify the acoustic problems in your listening space. By capturing detailed measurements of your room’s frequency response, you can clearly see where reflections, standing waves and room modes are colouring the sound — and by how much.
REW also includes an EQ design tool that can design a set of parametric EQ (PEQ) filters to map the measured in-room response of your system to your desired target curve. You set your target and some basic parameters, and REW’s algorithm does the rest. The filters values can then be used with any equaliser that supports PEQ filters, including audio processors and AV receivers, and software equalisers like Roon’s MUSE feature. The filters can also be exported as a file which can then be uploaded to a miniDSP audio processor.
Dirac Live can go further still, using the UMIK-1’s measurements to generate correction filters that address both frequency response and timing errors simultaneously. The result is a cleaner, more natural sound that more faithfully reflects what the recording engineer intended — regardless of the acoustic shortcomings of your room.
